Questions we actually get asked

Written by the people who answer the WhatsApp. If your question is not here, message us — a real person replies, usually within the hour.

Before you book
I have never surfed in my life. Is Taghazout right for me?

Yes, and it is one of the better places in the world to start. The bay has long, gentle beach breaks that break over sand, which is exactly what you want when you are learning to stand up. You are not thrown into a reef break on day one.

What matters more than the spot is the coaching. Our instructors decide where the group goes each day based on the tide and the swell, so beginners get the forgiving corner of the bay while stronger surfers get sent somewhere with more shape.

What is the minimum stay?

Two nights. There is no obligation to book a full week. What runs on a seven-day cycle is the activity programme — quad Monday, Paradise Valley Tuesday, the souk Wednesday, hammam Thursday, Kasbah and the beach party Friday, the Timlaline dunes Saturday, skatepark Sunday — so the length of your stay decides how much of it falls inside your dates, and your arrival day decides which part. Surf coaching runs every day except Tuesday, whatever your dates. Tell us what you most want to do and we will tell you which arrival day catches it.

When is the best time to come?

It depends what you want.

October to March is the classic Atlantic swell season. The waves are the most consistent of the year and the village is full of surfers. Best if you already surf and want size.

September to November and March to May are the sweet spot for beginners and improvers: cleaner, smaller waves, warm air, fewer people in the water.

June to August brings the smallest waves of the year. Ideal for a first week on a board, and the water is at its warmest.

The one thing that is true all year: Taghazout gets surf every month. There is no dead season.

I am travelling alone. Will that be awkward?

Roughly half the people who stay with us arrive on their own, and they are the reason the rooftop is what it is. The week has a rhythm — surf in the morning, one thing a day in the afternoon, long tables at dinner — and that structure does the work of introducing people so you do not have to.

If you would rather keep to yourself, that is equally fine. Nobody will drag you to the souk.

What exactly is included in a package?

Every package starts from the same base: a bed, breakfast, surf coaching and surf transport with the equipment. What changes between them is what gets added on top — excursions, activities, yoga, coworking.

Airport transfers are included from five nights on packaged trips. Below that, or on accommodation-only bookings, they are bookable separately.

Lunch and dinner, hammam, laundry and anything marked as an add-on are extra. The inclusions are listed in full on each package page before you pay.

Can I book just a bed, without the surf?

Yes. Accommodation-only is available at all four of our addresses, and you can add lessons, a scooter, a coworking pass or an excursion later — on the site or once you are here.

Do you take families and children?

Yes. Guests under 18 need to be with a parent or guardian, and surf lessons for minors need written consent from them. Tell us the ages when you book so we can put you in the right accommodation and the right group in the water.

In the water
What level do I need to be?

Any, from never having touched a board to intermediate. We run three levels — beginner, lower intermediate and intermediate — and groups are formed by level, not by who booked together.

Be honest with us about your level when you book. If we put you in the wrong group we will move you — that is a safety call, not a judgement.

Lessons run every day except Tuesday, in small groups, with two hours of coaching in the water, a safety and theory briefing, board, wetsuit, a packed lunch and a parasol on the beach.

Do I need to bring a board or a wetsuit?

No. Boards, wetsuits, leashes and wax are included in every lesson and package. We carry a full range of volumes, from soft-tops for the first week to performance shapes.

If you prefer your own board, bring it — declare it when you book the transfer so we send a vehicle that fits it.

How cold is the water?

Comfortable, by Atlantic standards. A 3/2 mm wetsuit covers most of the year, and a 4/3 mm is more comfortable in the coldest weeks of winter. We provide both.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes. You must be able to swim confidently in open water. You do not need to be fast or elegant — you need to be comfortable when a wave puts you underwater for a couple of seconds.

What if the sea is too big or too flat on my day?

Then we move the session, not cancel it. Surf times follow the tide rather than the clock, and the daily plan is set the evening before. If a spot is unsafe we go to another one; if the whole coast is out, we swap the session to another day of your stay or replace it with an activity.

A change of spot or time is part of surfing here. It is not a cancellation and it does not cost you a session.

I am coming with someone who does not surf. What do they do?

A great deal. Feel Alive runs one thing a day, every day of the week — quad biking, Paradise Valley, the Agadir souk, hammam, the Kasbah cable car, the dunes at Timlaline, the skatepark at sunset. Non-surfers can join any of it. There is also yoga daily except Thursday, and the coworking space for anyone who needs to work.

Getting here
Which airport, and how do I get to you?

Agadir Al Massira (AGA) is the airport you want — about 45 minutes from Taghazout. Marrakech (RAK) is possible but is a three-hour drive.

Our own van and our own drivers meet you in arrivals. No haggling at the exit, no negotiating a taxi at midnight after a delayed flight.

What do you need from me for the transfer?

Your flight number and arrival time, at least 48 hours before you land. That is what lets us track the flight and adjust if you are delayed — at no extra cost.

The driver waits up to 60 minutes after the actual landing time. If your flight is cancelled or diverted, message us as soon as you know and we rebook the pick-up.

Do I need a visa?

Nationals of the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and many other countries do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Rules change, and they depend on your passport — check with the Moroccan consulate or embassy for your country before you travel. Your passport should be valid for at least six months.

What about money and cards?

The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). It is a closed currency, so you get it here rather than before you leave. There are ATMs in Taghazout and many more in Agadir.

We accept cash in dirhams or euros, and cards. Card payments carry a 5% processing fee. The village itself is largely cash — small shops, cafés, the fish market. Bring some.

Staying with us
What are check-in and check-out times?

Check-in from 14:00, check-out by 11:00. Reception is open 08:00 to 18:00, night staff until 03:00, and WhatsApp 24 hours.

Late flights are routine here. Tell us in advance and someone will be expecting you.

Do you take a security deposit?

Not in cash, no. We place a pre-authorisation on your card at check-in — a temporary hold, not a payment. No money leaves your account.

It is released when you leave, once the room and the equipment have been checked. Your bank then restores the amount to your available balance, usually straight away, occasionally within a few working days.

If we ever needed to charge for damage, we would send you photographs and a costing first, and give you the chance to respond. Nothing is taken without telling you.

What are the four addresses, and which should I pick?

Surf Hostel — the social one, rooftop, dorms and privates, where the week is run from.

Surf Guesthouse — quieter, a short walk away, for people who want the rooftop without sleeping above it.

Bay Studio and Bay Duplex — self-contained apartments in a secure residence with a pool, ten minutes from the beach, for couples, families and longer stays.

Whichever you choose, the surf sessions, excursions and long tables all happen at the hostel. You drop in when you feel like it.

What is the wifi like?

Standard wifi is included everywhere and handles messaging, browsing and email. If you need real bandwidth — video calls, uploads, remote work — take the High-Speed Pass (up to 200 Mbps), available by day, week or month, or use the coworking space where the fibre is.

Are meals included?

Breakfast is. Lunch and dinner are available and are worth taking at least a few times — the long tables are where the week actually happens. Vegetarian and most dietary requirements are fine with notice; tell us when you book.

Is there a curfew?

The property closes at 03:00, for the security of everyone staying. If you are out later, message us beforehand and we will let you in. It is not a rule about your evening — it is about not having the door open all night.

Working from here
Can I actually work from Taghazout?

Yes, and a growing number of our guests do exactly that for weeks at a time. The coworking space has real desks, fibre internet, ergonomic chairs, soundproofed call booths, air conditioning and lockers.

The pattern most people settle into: surf at eight, online by ten.

Do I need to stay with you to use the coworking?

No. Day passes are open to anyone, whether you are staying with us, elsewhere in the village, or living here.

The hours differ, though. If you are staying at one of our addresses you get a personal door code and 24-hour access — useful when the tide means starting at six. Day pass holders from outside have access from 8:30 to 20:30.

We do not sell weekly or monthly passes. If you need a desk most days over a longer stay, the Stay & Work package is the one that covers it.

Can I take calls?

Yes. There are soundproofed booths for exactly that, so the main room stays quiet for everyone else. Calls and video meetings belong in the booths.

Practical
Is Taghazout safe?

Yes. It is a small fishing and surfing village where people know each other, and it is used to international visitors. Normal travel sense applies — do not leave a phone on a café table, do not leave valuables on the beach while you surf. Lockers and a safe are available.

What should I wear in the village?

Beachwear on the beach, something over it in the village. Taghazout is a working Moroccan village, not a resort, and that small courtesy is noticed and appreciated. Nobody expects you to cover up entirely — shorts and a t-shirt are completely normal.

Is alcohol available?

Taghazout is largely dry. There are licensed places in Agadir and at Taghazout Bay, and the Friday beachfront DJ night is a fixture. Do not expect a bar on every corner — that is not what this village is.

We are a couple. Is there anything we need to bring?

If you are visiting from abroad, no — nothing beyond your passports. There is no document to produce and no question you will be asked.

Moroccan and Muslim couples sharing a room are required by Moroccan law to present a marriage certificate at check-in. That obligation comes from the law, not from us, and it does not apply to international visitors.

Do you need my passport?

Yes. Moroccan law requires us to register every guest and record an identity document. It applies to all nationalities and it is not optional. It takes two minutes at check-in.

Do you offer laundry, hammam, yoga?

Laundry and hammam are available at extra cost. Yoga runs daily except Thursday. Massage and wellness services can be arranged — ask at reception.

Booking and payment
How do I book?

Directly on this site, through our booking engine. It is the cheapest way — no platform commission sitting between us — and it is the only way we can see your whole trip in one place and organise it properly.

What is your cancellation policy?

Standard bookings can be cancelled free of charge up to 48 hours before arrival. Inside 48 hours, and for no-shows, the full amount is due.

Some promotional, non-refundable and group rates carry stricter conditions — where they do, it is stated clearly before you pay. The exact terms that apply to your booking are the ones in your confirmation.

The full detail is in our booking conditions.

Can I change my dates?

Yes, subject to availability, with an administrative fee of EUR 15 per modification and per room. Message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you straight away whether it is possible.

Do I need travel insurance?

We strongly recommend it, and we recommend that it covers water sports specifically — many standard policies exclude them. Our own insurance covers our liability as an operator; it does not cover your injury, your illness, your repatriation or your belongings.

How does the deposit work for a scooter?

A scooter rental takes a deposit of EUR 120 at collection — EUR 50 for a bicycle, EUR 20 for a board or wetsuit. It is returned within seven working days after the vehicle has been checked.

That is different from accommodation, where we place a pre-authorisation on your card instead. The scooters are run by a separate company with its own rules, and this is one of them.

Two things worth knowing before you ride: the insurance on the vehicle is third-party only — it does not cover injury to you, theft, or damage to the scooter itself — and a helmet is compulsory. Check that your travel insurance covers riding a two-wheeler.

I saw three different company names on my invoice. Is that normal?

Yes. BigBlue Surf Experience is a brand covering three Moroccan companies: Auberge Lespot for accommodation, the surf school and the coworking space, BigBlue Scooters Rentals for the scooters, and Mamoune Travels for transfers and transport.

Each holds its own licences and its own insurance for what it operates — which is why they are separate. For you nothing changes: one booking, one payment, one team to talk to, and we handle the rest.

Will you ever ask for my card security code?

Never. Not by email, not on WhatsApp, not by phone. Your card details are only ever entered on the secure payment page of our booking engine. If you receive a message asking for your CVV and claiming to be from us, it is not from us — tell us immediately.

Still not sure?

Send us a message on WhatsApp or write to our contact form. Tell us roughly when you want to come and what you are hoping for, and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit.
